Just sixteen miles from the Port, Narec, the National Renewable Energy Centre, has become an international centre for offshore wind expertise and attracts UK and international companies keen to take advantage of its unique testing facilities.
The centre has invested over £150 million of UK government, private sector and European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) in world-leading capabilities which are supporting industry in delivering lower cost and more reliable offshore renewable energy technologies.
Its open-access and independent turbine blade, nacelle, electrical and subsea testing facilities, along with the proposed Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Site, encourage collaborative research and development and support renewables businesses in their growth and the commercialisation of new products.
Investors using the centre benefit from a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers operating some of Europe’s largest translational research, development and testing facilities for offshore wind, wave, tidal and electrical network technologies.
Narec has the only independent blade testing facility in the UK able to test very large wind turbine blades and offers dual axis testing, which is unique within the UK.
